At a time when Africa and Europe are rethinking how to work together, trust, investment, and shared ambition have never been more important.
Ahead of the Africa Forward Summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, Aspen Initiative Nairobi, in partnership with Aspen Institute France, convened the Africa-France Business Dialogue in Nairobi under the theme “Financing a Shared Future.”
The convening brought together business leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and innovators from across Africa and France to explore what a more balanced partnership, rooted in co-investment, mutual return, and shared prosperity, could look like in practice.
The Dialogue highlighted a significant shift in the conversation between Africa and France. For decades, engagement was often framed through the lens of development assistance: concessional, conditional, and largely one-directional. What emerged in Nairobi was a different vision: one grounded not in aid, but in capital, partnership, and long-term collaboration.
Setting the Stage for a New Investment Thesis
The Africa-France Business Dialogue was designed not simply as a convening, but as a space to examine how economic partnership between Africa and France must evolve to meet the realities of a rapidly changing global economy.
The conversations were anchored around a central question: What will it take to move capital into African markets at the pace and scale this moment demands, and what barriers continue to stand in the way?
Building on priorities identified during the October 2025 convening in Annecy, discussions explored five interconnected areas of opportunity: youth employment and entrepreneurship, climate-aligned investment, digital transformation, trade integration, and inclusive growth. Together, these themes pointed toward a broader shift in thinking. Rather than viewing Africa primarily through the lens of development assistance, participants increasingly framed the continent as a destination for investment, innovation, and long-term economic partnership.
The Dialogue’s interactive format reinforced this approach. Through Aspen’s signature fishbowl methodology, participants moved beyond formal presentations to engage directly with one another, creating space for candid discussion, practical problem-solving, and the exchange of perspectives across sectors and geographies.
Three Insights That Emerged
While discussions spanned sectors and geographies, several themes emerged repeatedly across sessions, pointing to a broader shift in how Africa’s economic future is being understood and financed.
First, Africa’s financial architecture is being rebuilt from within. The opening session, Financing a Shared Future underscored that the next phase of capital mobilization will not be imported. It will be shaped through blended finance vehicles designed around African market realities, stronger local currency markets that reduce exposure to foreign exchange shocks, and new mechanisms to unlock the continent’s substantial domestic pools of pension and sovereign capital.

Second, participants emphasized the importance of viewing Africa as an increasingly integrated market rather than as a collection of isolated national economies. Trade panels and discussions highlighted the need for France and European investors to engage with the continent as a dynamic operating environment where goods, services, and talent can move more freely.

Third, conversations reinforced that two defining realities will shape Africa’s economic future: the continent will add more workers to the global labor force this decade than the rest of the world combined, and it will bear a disproportionate share of climate-related costs despite contributing the least to global emissions. The investment opportunity that emerges from these realities lies in enterprises capable of creating dignified employment at scale while building the infrastructure of a low-carbon economy.

Showcasing Investment-Ready Innovation
The “Invest in Tomorrow” Showcase reflected a broader theme running throughout the Dialogue: Africa’s challenge is not a lack of innovation, but a need for stronger pathways connecting investment-ready enterprises to capital. Entrepreneurs presented ventures addressing critical challenges while demonstrating that growth, resilience, and decarbonization can be mutually reinforcing objectives.
The day concluded with a sunset networking reception, creating space for deeper conversations and the early stages of partnerships that will continue well beyond Nairobi. The broader takeaway for our network is that the language of partnership between Africa and France is shifting from sentiment to structure. Capital allocators, corporate strategists, and development institutions that recognize this transformation early will help shape its terms.

From Dialogue to Action
On the final day, delegates joined a site visit hosted by Centum Real Estate, grounding the conversation in tangible examples of investment-ready assets and infrastructure. The message was clear: the opportunities are real, the projects are underway, and the pathway for investment is open.

Building a Shared Future
The Africa-France Business Dialogue reflected Aspen Initiative Nairobi’s commitment to creating spaces where leaders can engage across sectors and geographies to tackle complex challenges and identify practical pathways forward.
More importantly, it highlighted a broader reality. The conversation between Africa and France is changing. Increasingly, the focus is shifting from assistance to investment, from donor-recipient dynamics to shared commercial opportunity, and from short-term transactions to long-term partnership.
The question is no longer whether Africa presents opportunities for investment and growth. The question is how quickly institutions, investors, and policymakers can adapt to the scale of the opportunity before them.
If the conversations in Nairobi are any indication, a new chapter in Africa-France relations is already underway.
Aspen Initiative Nairobi extends its sincere gratitude to all speakers, partners, sponsors, and participants who contributed to the success of the Dialogue, and especially to Aspen Institute France for its close partnership in convening this important gathering.
